Ordinary World
Twelve hundred acres
Corn, beans, and a rotation his father set in 1958 that Walt never saw a reason to change.
"A farmer who measured his life in harvests learns to measure it in afternoons."
Walt sold the last of the land in 2019 and went quiet for two years. What brought him back was not therapy. It was a caregiver who asked him to teach her how to sharpen a kitchen knife properly.

Ordinary World
Corn, beans, and a rotation his father set in 1958 that Walt never saw a reason to change.
The Call
2019. Everything went in a single afternoon. He shook a lot of hands and then he went home and did not say much for about two years.
Trials
The house was fine. His health was fine. There was simply nothing that needed him.
Allies
A caregiver brought in a dull paring knife and asked him to teach her. He talked for fifty minutes about steel.
Gifts
Now there is a whetstone on the kitchen table and a slow queue of dull knives from half the block.
The Return
Walt has taught nine people to sharpen properly. He keeps count. Of course he keeps count.
